Family day cares, homes and child care centers in low income neighborhoods in Charlottesville.
Community members interested in volunteering with kids, who are able to commit one to two hours per week, from October through May.
To ensure the safety of the kids in our program, all new volunteers must participate in an orientation session and submit a background check, the costs of which are covered by ReadyKids.
To ensure that children get the most out of this program, we ask child care providers and volunteers to commit to participating in the full program which runs weekly from October to May (with holiday breaks).
Play Partners volunteers are paired into two-person teams, and each team is matched with a child care provider for the full program year. If a volunteer is unable to make it to a session, we have substitute volunteers who can lend a hand!
Play Partners sessions are generally one-hour long, and are scheduled between 9am-11am on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings. Child care providers and volunteers will work with the program manager to coordinate schedules on an individual basis.
We provide the Play Partners curriculum and all corresponding activities, supplies and books. Supplemental volunteer trainings are offered throughout the year, and our staff are always readily available to offer additional support to individual volunteers.
Volunteers help children build vocabulary by leading enrichment activities centered around a "story of the month". Child care providers support Play Partners sessions by actively participating during the visit and continuing to work on concepts taught throughout the week.
These activities encourage kids to listen attentively, discuss themes, and follow instructions in a group setting, skills they will use throughout their lives.
At the end of each month, Play Partners provides each child with their own copy of the "story of the month" to take home, these books are the beginning of a home-library for many families.
Play Partners engages parents in their child's experience by sending home activity sheets corresponding with the story of the month to encourage reading and learning in the home.
